Kevin Maxwell, Portrait of Terry, chalk pastels on cansen paper, 14×16 $120

The piece I submitted to the exhibition is a portrait inspired by the wonderful model Terry, who poses for a small group of artists at an art studio, of which I am a member here in Taipei, Taiwan. The portrait was created utilizing chalk pastels, a medium which I have only recently become familiar with but I have come to enjoy it’s immediacy of color possibilities.

I have been given the luxury of spending longer periods of time here in Taiwan with my partner, Ming-che Lee who lives here since I retired from my life as an Art Therapist in 2017. While here in Taiwan I have missed the supportive community of artists I have enjoyed working with at Gallery 35 since it’s inception at New York Unitarian Universalist Community Church, but I am also fortunate to have found a home with this small group of figurative artists here in Taiwan (though I do find it challenging to communicate with them as my ability converse in Chinese has a long way to go).

During my time at Gallery 35 I participated in an average of 1-2 exhibitions yearly since it was founded in 2004, giving me invaluable experience and support as an artist living in highly stimulating and competitive city like New York City. I look forward to the opportunity for continuing my association with Gallery35 from Taiwan as we work span the interconnecting globe. www.khmaxwell.com
